The Balance of a Palette
The premise
Ask what makes a palette work and the count of tubes is the wrong place to start. Daniel’s answer names three properties: “Cohesion and balance and range is what you need for a working palette.” Colors that balance each other, each one necessary, and enough reach between them to get where the painting needs to go.
The count question answers itself from there. “A palette doesn’t get better by bringing more colors in; it gets more complex and difficult, because color harmony is really important.” Every added tube multiplies the mixtures that can go wrong. “Limited palettes help the colors interact in an elegant way; a lot of random mixtures can create a very jarring finished painting.” A palette that works is a system: every pile can meet every other pile without a fight.
And it stays a baseline, not a law. He’ll bring in Prussian blue for painting outside, cadmiums when a sunset or a highlight won’t get bright enough without them, a cobalt or a cerulean when ultramarine can’t make a bright sky. The bring-in is deliberate; the baseline stays small. Guidelines and explanations of how it works, in his framing. Not the best palette out there, because that varies too.
The demonstration
Three charts carry the argument, running from the specific to the principle.
Start with The palette, charted, the Bilmes palette, on the color page. Three muted primaries: burnt sienna for the red, ultramarine for the blue, yellow ochre for the yellow. “Those are my choices for primaries.” Then two push colors: “I use permanent rose and phthalo green to push up the cools and the more vibrant colors, and they incorporate with the yellow ochre as well.” The chart lays out the palette itself: the five colors and his two whites, lead the transparent one for glazes, titanium the opaque workhorse. Some of its reach only appears through white: “Permanent rose, phthalo green, and white create almost a warm blue, which is borderline oxymoron.” Seven tubes, every one with a job.

Then the extreme case: The palette, charted, on the Zorn page. Four pigments: lead white, yellow ochre, vermilion, ivory black, with the mixes they reach. There is no blue tube at all. The cool notes come from the black, which reads cool set against the warm colors around it. Strip a palette down this far and you can watch balance doing the work that usually gets credited to count.

Close with Three palettes, one principle. Zorn’s four in one row, the Bilmes five in the next, and Reilly’s nine-value gray string in the third, where every color is fixed to a value before it touches the canvas. Three painters, three aims, three counts. The shared move is the same in every row: a short set of balanced primaries opening a wide range of harmony. That’s why this figure comes last. Once you have seen the working palette and the extreme palette, the comparison shows the constant underneath both.

The master’s example
Zorn is the proof case because nothing is hiding. Four pigments, and Daniel’s read: “The Zorn palette is a great explanation because there’s enough of a range in there, and because it’s so simplified there’s only one way to really get somewhere, so you don’t have to worry about colors clashing or things being too saturated.” The mechanism sits in the ancestry. With four pigments, every mixture on the canvas shares parents with every other mixture. Harmony stops being an achievement and becomes a property of the material. Cohesion is built in. Balance is the warm pair held between white and black. And the range, in his words, is enough.
Daniel’s five sit one step out on the same line. The muted triad holds the balance the way Zorn’s four do, and the push pair buys back what the muting spends: the cools and the brighter notes, still folding into the ochre rather than fighting it. Four pigments or five, the palette is balanced before it is anything else. More tubes would not make either one better. They would make it harder to keep in tune.
The exercise
The palette-string exercise, straight from the Finishing Touches demo. His palette that day: “This is lead white, this is phthalo green, this is permanent rose, and this is yellow ochre deep. I also have burnt sienna and ultramarine blue on my palette. A lot of my skin tones I basically mix with this combo.”
Materials: those five colors plus white, a palette knife, a palette (a glass slab or a white plate works), and a scrap of primed paper or canvas board. Use titanium white. His demo white is lead, chosen for how it behaves in glazes, and lead white is actual lead. It is not a casual material, and nothing in this exercise needs it.
- The base. White, loosened with a touch of medium until it moves easily. He uses Oleo Gel; a drop of linseed oil does for the exercise.
- The mid pile. Yellow ochre deep and permanent rose into the white, with a small touch of phthalo green. Stop when it reads as a believable mid skin tone.
- The string. Pull two more piles from the same three pigments. One darker: more ochre, more rose, the same green, less white. One lighter: the same mixture carried up with more white. Three piles now, one family.
- The dark pile. Burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, little or no white. This is the shadow end. Lean it warmer with more sienna, cooler with more ultramarine.
- The test. On the scrap, lay a stroke of the dark pile and pull the darker mid into it while both are wet. Then the mid, then the light. Look at every border.
The rule that makes it a system is the pigment list. Every pile comes from the same short set, and that is why the borders behave. His words, mid-demo: “Since these colors are very similar and I mix them using the same paints, I can make these interact pretty easily. I’m not worried about where one of the brushes ends and the other one begins.”
Forty-five minutes to an hour, most of it at the palette. That’s faithful to the demo: his first half hour goes to the piles and their relationships before any form gets built. What to look for: every place two strings meet should make a color you would keep. If a border jars, trace it back. One of the piles broke the shared-pigment rule.
Self-check
- You can name the pigment list from memory, and every pile on the palette traces back to it.
- Any two neighboring piles dragged into each other make a color you would use. A jarring border means a pile came from outside the system.
- The range is real: the dark pile still reads dark next to the lightest pile, and the string climbs from one to the other without a gap you can’t mix across.
- The dark pile answers the lean test both ways: more burnt sienna and it warms, more ultramarine and it cools.
- Nothing on the palette is idle. A tube that earned no pile stays capped, and if the subject needs a color the five can’t reach, you bring it in on purpose and can say why.
